On Saturday 6/01/2019 at approximately 8:45 am, Wellfleet PD started to receive reports of an erratic operation of a motor vehicle, a white Toyota Camry travelling in Eastham. This vehicle was reported to be travelling at a high rate of speed, cutting off other vehicles and almost causing an accident. The vehicle was reported to be in the area of Cumberland Farms in Eastham travelling towards Wellfleet with extensive damage to the front bumper (almost falling off).
Officers on patrol observed the vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed (radar reading of 87 mph), erratic operations and the vehicle almost struck the Long Pond Bridge overpass. The vehicle continued eastbound on Rt. 6 before the officer on patrol could attempt to make a traffic stop.
A Detail Officer was stationed at the Gross Hill and Rt. 6 traffic light (just north of the Long Pond Bridge) in a marked cruiser with the emergency lights activated as he was controlling traffic. The Detail Officer was for the Wellfleet Sprint Triathlon (swim-bike-run race) and assigned to close traffic on Gross Hill Road and Lawrence Road for this event. Upon seeing the parked police cruiser with the emergency lights on, the operator of the White Camry, locked up the brakes and skidded through the intersection almost causing an accident and coming to a stop.
Officers on patrol and the detail officer were able to quickly affect a motor vehicle stop of the white Camry and take control of the situation. After a roadside investigation, a 28 years of age, female from Truro was placed under arrest. (name being withheld as this remains an active investigation).
Pending charges for OUI alcohol, possession of drugs and other traffic violations.
Wellfleet PD is working with Eastham PD to determine what offenses and charges are appropriate for Eastham.
